Deemed varsities rally behind Arjun on quota

New Delhi: The Government on Thursday got a shot in the arm as major private universities in the country unanimously agreed to implement its proposed reservation policy for students from the Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

The Vice-Chancellors of the eight unaided universities, who had a meeting with HRD Minister Arjun Singh Here, are believed to have conveyed their unanimous decision to him.
The details of the reservation policy for the private institutions are yet to be worked out.

However, the promise given by the institutions, including the Birla Institute of Technology, Pilani, Manipal University and Symbiosis Institute of Management that they would implement the reservation policy would bring relief to the Government as it has been struggling to implement the OBC quota policy.

Universities in South reach Consensus

Hyderabad: Considering the worth of networking the buzzword of the industry, the universities in southern states have reached a consensus on the need for collaborative projects amongst them apart from giving a push to research by establishing university-industry interfaces.

This was one of the fallout of the recently concluded South Zone Vice-Chancellors’ conference here apart from the resolution adopted to get ‘complete’ autonomy from regulating agencies.

Several Vice-Chancellors’ have voiced their concerns, particularly the tight string budget available for research, social sciences in particular. The collaboration will necessarily mean focus on sharing generic resources like library, research material and human resource with a contextual orientation for integration, problem solving, training learning and strengthening of capabilities.

Hail health! Eat more fish, study says

Washington: Most people should eat more fish because of its health benefits, the US Institute of Medicine reported on Tuesday, but added that consumers must also consider the risks of chemically contaminated seafood.

The report was hailed by the US fisheries industry and criticized by environmental and science watchdog groups, which said the study used old data and failed to adequately address the environmental impacts of fishing ans fish-farming.

“The average person can consume more fish than they do; I think average consumption is not up to the levels that we have allowed,” said Susan Krebs-Smith of the National Cancer Institute, who served on a committee that wrote the report.

The report offered guidelines that suggest a limited intake of fish – two 85-gram servings a week – for women of child-bearing age and children aged 12 and under, but even these two groups can safely eat 340 grams a week.

Software helps Doctors calculate heart attack risk

An international consortium of researchers, led by the University of Edinburgh has developed a programme that enables doctors to swiftly assess the severity of a patient’s condition. The new ‘risk calculator’ is already being used in British hospitals. Doctors using the new system take key data from patients at their bedside and input it into the specially devised programme. Doctor’s record key facts such as a patient’s age, medical history, as well as information derived from on-the-spot blood samples and kidney tests.

The new patient’s statistical profile is then input into a computer and matched with data derived from thousands of other coronary cases. Using the outcomes of these previous cases as a guide, the computer will not only give an accurate assessment of the new patient’s conditions but also recommend possible treatment. Significantly, it will be able to predict the likelihood of the patient suffering a heart attack, and even their chances of dying in the next months.

Art through Microscopes

Advancing science, as well as art, through microscopy research

Tallahassee: As biochemist Michael Davidson peered at monkey DNA through his microscope two decades ago, he saw more than scientific form and function. He saw art.

He eventually began taking pictures of crystallized substances ranging from vitamins to beer as seen through a microscope. His images have been used for calendars, posters, greeting cards and women's sportswear - but most profitably on neckties. The "Molecular Expressions" ties were such a hit in the 1990s they earned millions for Davidson, the tie company, a charity and Florida State University's National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, where he heads the Optical Microscopy Division. The lab's $1.5 million share provided seed money for microscopy research that continues to advance science - and art Mr. Davidson is one of the most successful of a small but growing band of microscope artists. Research has brought quantum communication and computing closer to reality

From Friction to fact Breakthrough in Teleportation
London: “Beaming” people as in the star movie “Star Trek” is still in the realms of science fiction but physicists in Denmark have teleported (breaking down matter at one point and assembling it at another) information from light to matter, bringing quantum communication and computing closer to reality. In science fiction , teleportation devices convert a person or object into an energy pattern in a process called dematerialization, then “beam” it to a target, where it is reconverted into matter.

Until now scientists have teleported similar object such as light or single atoms over short distance from one spot to another in a split second. But Professor Eugene Polzik and his team at the Neil’s Bohr Institute at Copenhagen University in Denmark have made a breakthrough by using both light and matter.
