A release said that candidates could obtain the forms during office working hours, on payment of Rs.100, in cash. How much does it costs to setup a medical college
Chennai: with the state Government promising to set up a medical college in each of the 30 districts, the one question that has popped up is : How much does it costs to setup a medical college?
To start a medical college from scratch it needs around 150 crore, industry sources estimate. This includes the cost of land, setting up of hospital, staffing it, establishing teaching departments, and satisfying the infrastructure criteria prescribed by the Medical Council of India, the Tamil Nadu Government and the university.
As per the MCI guidelines, the minimum land requirement in a metro is five acres, and 25 acres in rural areas. The college should be attached to a 300-bedded hospital, up and running at the time of applying for recognition. The hospital should have five functional departments: medicine, surgery, Orthopedics, obstetrics and Gynecology and pediatrics.

Tamil University likely to regain control of Tribal Research Centre
Udhagamandalam: Tamil University was likely to regain control of the Tribal Research Centre (TRC) at M. Palada, near here.
Tamil University Vice-Chancellor C. Subramaniam told reporters here on Wednesday that till about 10 years ago, the TRC was part of the university.
With the Adi-Dravida and Tribal Welfare Department taking it over, the matter had gone to the court which had recently ruled that a department created on the basis of the Universities Act cannot be nullified by a Government Order.

Experts panel to examine textbooks
Chennai: School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu on Tuesday said that a committee of experts would examine all textbooks to look for communal comments.
Intervening in the budget debate in the State Assembly, the Minister said that the Government was working on the constitution of the committee and all the school textbooks would come under the scrutiny.
The Committee would also examine the syllabus to decide if it was too heavy. He later said that he had received many complaints that the students could not cope with some of the subjects.

Uniform Academic Calendar
New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has constituted a committee to prepare the feasibility report for the establishing uniform academic calendar in the universities at national level to enable the free movement of students from one state to another, Rajya sabha was informed in Tuesday.
Accordingly, a curricular has been issued in March 2006 by the UGC to 340 universities to get their feed back in this regard, Minister of state for Human Resource Development M.A.A. Fatmi said in a written reply.

Seats for Students who Passed in Second Attempt
Chennai: Plus-Two students who have failed in the first attempt this year but have managed to pass in the next attempt have some good news: they can still get into a professional college, if they had taken the professional colleges” entrance examination.
Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudi told the Assembly that students would get the unfilled seats in professional colleges.
Mr. Ponmudi later said that in the normal course, the students would have to wait for the next academic year. But this year, because the examinations were held soon after the announcement of the results and since the Government managed to garner additional seats from private engineering colleges, this facility was being extended to students. “I think we will have seats for these students also because of the manner in which the entire admission issue was handled”, he told The Hindu.

NCERT begins Work on New Textbooks
New Delhi: Making an effort to think the knowledge in books with every appearances of students, the NCERT has begun work on preparing of new text books to the introduced next year.
The preparation of text books is on in full swing for classes II, IV, VII, X and XII, which will be introduced from April 2007, Prof M. A. Khader, head of the curriculum group of NCERT, said.
“The Major thrust of all text books will be establishing a link between school knowledge in different subjects to the life experience of students “, he said. To ensure this Khader said, a set of guidelines have been prepared by the Council.

Interim Order Applicable to Medical Colleges also
Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday clarified that its interim order of July 18 on admission and fee in unaided professional colleges in the State was applicable to all courses and colleges including medical colleges.
Justice S. Sari Jagan made it clear that he passed the interim order after considering all writ petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Kerala Professional Colleges (Prohibition of Capitation Fees, Regulation of Admissions, Fixation of Non-Exploitative Fees and Other Measures to Ensure Equity and Excellence in Professional Education) Act, 2006 and that it was a general order.
The court said that no separate order was passed when writ petitions filed by the Malankara Medical Mission and the Pushpagiri medical college came up before it since a general interim direction had already been issued.

ECE, CSE Most Sought-after Courses
Chennai: Eighty per cent of students who have attended the single window counseling, chose only Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering or Information Technology.
After the first four days of the counseling (July 21-24), not a single student had opted for branches such as food, rubber, polymer, fashion technology, textile chemistry, Petrochemical technology, or instrumentation and control engineering. Similarly, there are no takers for automobile engineering offered by self-financing colleges.
When counseling began at four locations in the State on July 21 (for regular academic stream), the single window pool had 56,260 seats (including Anna University’s constituent colleges – 1505; government and aided colleges 3,179 and unaided colleges 51576 seats). Another 212 seats were surrendered after counseling began taking the number to 56,472.

Dates for talent Exam Announced
New Delhi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) announced dates for its National Talent Search Examination for 2007. It offers 1,000 scholarships for students of Class VIII and X.
According to an official release issued by the NCERT, ”as per the new scheme from this year, students will be offered scholarship from Class VIII and Class X”. Seats are also reserved for students belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. All states and union territories will make selections for Stage-I exams and the qualifying students will be eligible for the Stage-II examination, organized by the NCERT.
Dates of the exams for the class VIII and X are common for Stage-I and will be conducted on November 11,2006 by Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
