Centre seeks to provide all-India Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribes quota in PG medicine Files petition in Supreme Court for approval for 2007-08 admissions New Delhi: The Centre has sought the Supreme Court’s approval for providing 22.5 per cent reservation to the Scheduled Caste and the Scheduled Tribes under the all-India quota in postgraduate admissions to government medical colleges in 2008– 2008. For 2006 – 2007, the Centre did not provide for SC / ST reservation under the 50 percent all India quota, as a 2005 apex court judgment said the 50 per cent all India quotas should be exclusive of reservation. Students bag prize in design contest Tiruchy: Two students of the Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute, Kumulur, have won the second prize, for their fruit and vegetable washer model, at the national-level design competition for students of agricultural and food engineering held at the Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Bhopal. Students from about 20 agricultural universities across the country demonstrated their models for mechanizing agriculture-based industries in the 21st century. According to the students, K.Ganeshamurthy and M.Govindraj, who are doing third year B.Tech (Agriculture), fruits and vegetables are currently sold raw, unclean and unwashed. Compulsory seminars for doctors soon Mandatory rural posting for junior doctor on completion of internship Chennai: Doctors will soon have to mandatory attend continuing medical education programmes to ensure that they stay abreast of the modern management practices in their speciality, the Union Health Ministry Anbumani Ramadoss said here on Thursday. Inaugurating a Continuing Medical Education Programme in connection with the four day annual conference of the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS), Dr. Ramadoss said under the proposed norm, doctors would have to attend 60 hours of CME programmes in five years to be eligible for re-registration. The Minister said it was also planned to introduce from this year compulsory rural posting for junior doctors on completion of internship. Panel to submit report on common syllabus next month Tiruchi: The Committee on Common Syllabus for Schools will submit its report in February, School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu said here on Thursday. The committee has looked into how parity could be reached between the State and Matriculation and Anglo-Indian boards in terms of curriculum, teaching and examination pattern without compromising on the quality of education. The idea is to ensure that students study only what they are supposed to learn for a particular standard, and simultaneously improve delivery mechanisms through activity-based learning in Government schools, Mr. Thennarasu told The Hindu. President okays Other Backward Classes(OBC) Bill The legislations to provide 27 percent reservation for OBCs in elite educational institutions, including IITs and IIMs from the next academic year, became law today with the presidential A P J Abudul kalam giving his assent to it. “The central Educational institutions (reservation in admission) Bill 2006 has received the assent of the president,” an official press note said. The Act paves the way for implementing reservation form the academic session of 2007. Both houses of parliament passed the bill last month. The provisions of the act will not apply to a central educational institution established in a tribal area, institutions of excellence, research institutions, institutions of national and strategic importance and minority educational institutions.
