The legislations to provide 27 percent reservation for OBCs in elite educational institutions, including IITs and IIMs from the next academic year, became law today with the presidential A P J Abudul kalam giving his assent to it.

“The central Educational institutions (reservation in admission) Bill 2006 has received the assent of the president,” an official press note said.

The Act paves the way for implementing reservation form the academic session of 2007. Both houses of parliament passed the bill last month. The provisions of the act will not apply to a central educational institution established in a tribal area, institutions of excellence, research institutions, institutions of national and strategic importance and minority educational institutions.
