Outgoing VC humiliated in University’s 150th year
Chennai: S P Thyagarajan, the man who had led the University of Madras into its historic 150th year just two days ago, was gheraoed, heckled and humiliated by a strong group of non-teaching staff and a few professors when he demitted office as Vice-Chancellor today after completing his three-year term.
As Thyagarajan came out of his office in the University Centenary Building at around 3.30 p.m. to leave home, members of the Madras University Staff Association heckled him and refused to allow him to get into the official car of the Controller of Examination. Vociferous members shouted slogans against him and also passed rude comments. They snatched a bouquet presented to him by well-wishers and some attempted to snatch his briefcase.
