Fee waiver for UG Students in Government Colleges

hennai: In a revolutionary measure that would increase access to higher education, Finance Minister K Anbazhagan on Friday announced that undergraduate students studying in government arts and science colleges would be exempted from payment of tuition fees.

Presenting the budget for 2007-08 in the State Assembly, the Minister said the measure was aimed at enabling students from the lower strata of society to pursue higher education.

Following the success of the shift system introduced in 10 government colleges, the system would be implemented in all government colleges in the coming academic year. As a result, the admission capacity in government colleges would double from 30,000 to 60,000. Further 500 additional classrooms would be constructed in government colleges at a cost of Rs. 25 crore, he said.
