Bharathiar University to open college at Valparai

It will begin functioning on September 9

Coimbatore: Bharathiar University Arts and Science College, a constituent college of the university, will begin functioning at Valparai on September 9.

Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam told The Hindu here on Thursday that the college would offer four courses - B.Com, B.Com (Computer Applications), B.Sc.(Computer Science) and B.B.M. There would be 60 students in each class.

Russian recluse-genius declines top mathematics prize

Madrid: A Russian recluse who solved a complex riddle won the mathematics world’s version of a Nobel Prize on Tuesday. But true to form, he refused to accept the honour or attend the royal awards ceremony.

Grigory Perelman, 40, was singled out for resolving Poincare’s Conjecture, which has perplexed mathematicians since it was coined by the Frenchman Henri Poincare in 1904. But he was nowhere to be seen at the 25th annual International congress of Mathematicians in Madrid where Spain’s King Juan Carlos handed out the Fields Medals to Dr. Perelman and other winners.

Aid for tsunami-hit students

Villupuram: The Government of Tamilnadu would provide educational assistance to 70, 000 students affected by tsunami in Villupuram district, Minister for Fisheries K.P.P Samy said on Sunday.

He was addressing a gathering at the inaugural function of houses built for the tsunami victims by Billy Graham Evangelistic Association at Anaichakuppam in Villupuram district. He said that an assistance of Rs.300 would be provided to each of the affected school students. “The government will also provide scholarships to the students belonging to the fishing community who score high marks in government exams,” he said.

Over 16,800 seats vacant

Counselling for engineering courses ends
Chennai: More than 16,800 seats remained vacant in 240 colleges across the State as the single window admission to engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu came to an end on Sunday.
Of the 64,356 students who were called for counselling, 40,397 opted for the 57,776 seats on offer in the Anna University's constituent colleges, government, aided and unaided self-financing institutions.
The counselling began on July 17.

Chennai: The Directorate of Distance Education of the Pondicherry University (PUDDE) has launched online admission for candidates seeking admission for its post-graduate diploma programmes.


The Central University offers 17 post-graduate diploma programmes through distance learning and candidates applying for the programmes need not submit their original degree or transfer certificates. The University's director S. Ganesan told reporters at a press conference held at Loyola College recently that they expected more than 50 per cent of its applicants to avail of the online admission facility. The PUDDE, which was established in April 1995, currently offers four MBA degrees, 12 other post-graduate degree courses, 17 post-graduate diploma courses and seven under-graduate programmes. It has over 1,31,000 students on it rolls.

UGC Grants 80 lakh to Periyar University

Salem: The University Grants Commission (UGC) sanctioned a sum of Rs. 80 lakhs as second installment of grant under the 10th Five Year Plan to the Periyar University recently.


According to Vice-Chancellor of the university, T. Balakrishnan, the sum was granted based on the recommendation of an expert committee from the UGC, which visited the university recently to assess its requirements in June this year. Nod for Proposal to Change Administrative Structure of ICMR

New Delhi: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) has finally approved the long-standing proposal to change the administrative structure for the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).


The ICMR will now function as the main research arm of a new Department of Health Research (DHR) that will be established under the Ministry. The ICMR director-general will be the secretary of the DHR as well. According to Mr. Prasanna K. The Uncertainty over the fate of the Common Entrance Test to professional undergraduate courses seems to have earned the test per se more supporters than detractors, if one went by the mood at the first public hearing of the M.Anandakrishnan committee in Chennai recently. MCI Debars 25 Medical Teachers

Kozhikode: Mushroom ing of private self-financing medical colleges in southern states, including Kerala, has put the Medical Council of India (MCI) on guard against teachers who claim employment at more than one medical college at the same time.


Signaling a clear warning in this regard, the Council has debarred 25 medical teachers till July 31, 2007. Names of these doctors, including three from the State, have been temporarily erased from the Indian Medical Register and the list has been put on MCI’s website.

22,000 engineering seats vacant

Few takers for core branches; biotech no longer a favoured course

Chennai: Only a week remains before the single window counselling for B.E/B.Tech seats in the State is to end, but more than 22,000 seats remain vacant across 250 colleges in the State.


Going by the present trend, academics and analysts feel that at least 17,000 seats may not be filled before counselling ends. Of the 35,631 seats allotted so far through counselling, nearly 80 per cent the seats (28,345) were in the `circuit branches' — ECE, Computer Sciences and Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics and Instrumentation or Electrical and Electronics branches.

Veerappa Moily-headed Oversight Committee will shortly classify the institutes of higher learning that will start implementing the 27 per cent quota for Other Backward Classes from the coming academic year. Government Permission not needed for New Engineering Colleges: HC

Chennai: Once recognition was granted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the Anna University is obliged to grant affiliation to the new engineering colleges, the Madras High Court has ruled.


A Division Bench comprising Justice P Sathasivam and Justice V Dhanapalan gave the ruling while disposing of a batch of writ appeals from the State and another batch of writ petitions from various educational institutions.

Madras University to offer E-Course

Chennai: The University of Madras is planning to offer two online master’s course on food science and biotechnology as part of its tele-education project linked with pan-African e-network project, said its vice-chancellor S P Thyagarajan.


Addressing a press conference on Saturday to announce the 150th Foundation Day celebrations of the university, which would be inaugurated on September 4, Thyagarajan said the content creation for the e-course was nearing completion and it would be operational by year-end.

Quota Sought for Rural Students in Professional Colleges

Tindivanam: A group of educationists and social activists have appealed to the Tamil Nadu Government to pass a legislation providing 25 per cent reservation for rural students in professional colleges.

The panel, headed by former professor Bima Dhananjayan, met here on Saturday to deliberate on the ills plaguing the education system and corrective measures to be taken. It stated that 80 per cent of the seats be reserved for students from State Board schools, out of which 25 per cent should be set aside for rural students.

The remaining 18 per cent could be allocated to matriculation students and two per cent to CBSE students. The panel sought re-introduction of the proportionate reservation system based on the number of students in Plus Two at the district level.

Chennai: Concerned about the health of their students, more schools in Chennai have joined the battle against pesticide –laced cola products by banning sale or consumption of aerated soft drinks on their campuses. The ban has been imposed over the past two days, based on the disturbing findings of the Centre for Science and Environment that Pepsi and Coca Cola products contained pesticides far above permissible limits.

“Many Schools have enforced ban on colas (including the orange and lemon variants) over the past few days. Affiliation of schools to foreign boards

New Delhi: The Government has constituted a committee to recommend a policy regarding affiliation of Indian schools and international ones located in the country to foreign boards, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Monday.

In a written reply, Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari said as per the information available, 148 Indian schools are presently affiliated to the Cambridge International Examinations.

Replying to another question, she said that Urdu language, spoken by 5.18 percent of the population in the country, is being taught in 23 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.

240 Schools Upgraded

Chennai: The state government has upgraded 240 schools, to enable students to pursue studies on a continuous basis.

“Giving into public demand, the government has passed orders to upgrade 120 middle schools to high schools and 120 high schools to higher secondary schools”. Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu told the Assembly on Friday during his reply to the debate on demand for grants for his Ministry. An additional 7,979 teacher posts will be created in high schools and higher secondary schools from this year and will be filled through employment exchanges on a seniority basis. MBBS Phase II Counseling from August 10

Chennai: The second phase of counseling for MBBS/BDS courses for seats available under the State quota in government medical/dental and IRT Perundurai Medical College, would be held between August 10 and 12 with the counseling for reallotment of candidates, who had already been selected, slotted for day one.

A government release said that as many as 65 vacancies in government medical colleges, two in IRT College and 12 in the Government Dental College were reported after candidates did not join the seats allotted at the end of the first phase of counseling.

Kolkata: Reserving a handful of seats in the IITs and IIMs does not help the millions of disadvantaged children in India, feels N.R. Narayana Murthy, Chairman and Chief Mentor, Infosys Technologies Limited.

Education in India tends to cater to the lowest common denominator and in the process, it lowers academic standards and de-motivates high performers, said Mr. Murthy, speaking at 3rd K.C. Basu Memorial Endowment lecture, organized by the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences here on Thursday.

Anna Varsity to set up Regional Research Centres

Chennai: The Anna University is planning to set up regional research centres to promote technology research, in association with self – financing institutions in Chennai, according to its Vice – Chancellor D Viswanathan

Similar centres would also be set up in Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruchi, he said at a three – day “Teachers Training Programme on Renewable Energy Technologies for Engineering and Educational Institutions’ organised by the Solar Energy Centre, Ministry of Non – Conventional Energy Sources (MNES) and the Regional Office of the Ministry here on Thursday.

The university had requested self – financing institutions to make an investment of Rs. 25 lakh each to meet the expense of Rs. 75 crore towards setting up of the research facility.

IISc Bangalore Develops Child Tracking Device

Bangalore: Be it a strike or violence in some parts of the city, anxious parents need not get hyper. They can now not only track their children but also warn them if they are in a danger zone.

The child tracking device developed by the Centre of Electronics, Design and Technology (CEDT) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) here is going to be the size of a sleek mobile and can be fitted into the child’s shoe, belt or worm like a wristwatch, Dr Pavan Nuggehalli and T.V.Prabhakar, of CEDT, who led the project, said.

Counselling trend throws up Curious Pointers

Chennai: The end of the first phase of counselling for undergraduate engineering courses has thrown up a curious permutation as far as choice of courses goes. While the actual numbers of those seeking admissions has gone up compared to last year, more and more colleges are struggling to fill seats even in the high-intensity circuit branches.

Of the 57,257 seats available under the single window system, 15,206 have been allotted as on Tuesday. A total of 42,051 seats remain vacant at the end of the first phase. Of the 19,817 students called for counselling till now, 76.73 per cent has opted for a seat as compared to only 72 per cent during the same period last year.

    Chennai: In a major policy move, Anna University’s Syndicate has decided to convert its four constituent colleges into university departments.

    The Colleges of Engineering Guindy, the A.C. College of Technology, Guindy, the School of Architecture and Planning and the Madras Institute of Technology Chrompet, have been autonomous entities so far. Each of them has a separate administrative structure, with its own dean and controller of examinations.

    PG Seats for SC/ STs remain Vacant in IITs

    New Delhi: As government proposes to enhance reservation in institutions of higher learning, a number of seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes students in post-graduate courses in the Indian courses in the Indian Institutes of Technology have remained vacant down the years.

    The prescribed reservation for SCs and STs is 15 percent and 7.5 percent in post-graduate courses offered by Indian Institutes of Technology.

    But only 11.91 percent and 3.95 percent of the seats could be filled in the SC and ST categories respectively in 2005-06, Minister of State for Human Resource Development MAA Fatmi told the Rajya Sabha today in a written reply to a question.
